Abstraksi:This article grapples with social justice and psychology issues as they relate to trans people's being-in-the-world. It addresses the fact that trans people include two groups; (1 ) an identifiable social group that often garners intense levels of social marginalization and discrimination; and (2) a clinical or psychiatric group as diagnosable within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision {DSM-iV-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000). In both the social and psychiatric categorizations, the article indicates that trans people are subject to a range of repudiations that either negate or attempt to negate their claims to being genuinely mis-sexed, or of being outside the sex and gender binary schema.
