| Abstraksi | : | Abstract Alfred Adier's explication of "the meaning of life" (Adler, 1931) is examined with particular attention to the role of fictions. Fictions can be problematic—useful when pragmatically employed, but self-deceptive when they willfully deny reality and use fantasy to cope with the problems of life. The author investigates Adier's answer to the meaning of life and what it means "to meet reality," as Adler phrased it. Because the matter of fictive thought in deducing meaning can be traced back centuries, some historical viewpoints about fictions are compared to those of Adler to give perspective to this important topic. |
