Abstraksi:Abstract This article provides quantitative support for the theory of Individual Psychology through data analyses that show the importance of meeting the need to belong. The belonging aspect of social interest or community feeling in a person's lifestyle was assessed by the Belonging/Social Interest scale and the Being Cautious scale of the BASIS-A Inventory (Wheeler, Kern, & Curlette, 1993). The pervasiveness of meeting the need to belong is illustrated by statistically significant relationships between (a) Belonging/Social Interest, Being Cautious, or both, and (b) variables in research on parenting styles, stress coping, depression and anxiety, leadership, and criminal behavior. Based on the quantitative research presented, the authors conclude that (a) lack of belonging in the family of origin is a more explanatory construct than belonging with childhood peers, and (b) meeting the need to belong is important in a wide variety of situations.
