Abstraksi:Statistics show the time commuting workers spend driving has more than quadrupled in the last twenty years. These changes have been linked with higher stress levels but not chronic, unrelieved stress—burnout. Using an applied sample, we examined workers’ commute experiences and burnout symptomology arguing those with an internal locus of control would be especially negatively affected. While the anticipated burnout linkage was not found, commute experiences were associated with higher stress levels particularly for carpoolers and those who felt less control. Further, commuters reported significant negative effects on the quality of their nonwork activities.
