Abstraksi:Both psychological disorders and loneliness are quite pervasive in North America. This study compared the causes of the loneliness experienced by those with chronic psychological disorders to that of their counterparts in the general population. Three hundred and thirty three participants answered a 30 item yes/no questionnaire. The causes of loneliness were composed of the following five factors: Personal inadequacy, Developmental deficits, Unfulfilling intimate relationships, Relocation/significant separations, and Social marginality. Those with psychological disorders were compared to the general population, and then further divided into six homogeneous subgroups (i.e. those with depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety-related disorders, substance abuse, and “other”) and were compared to each other and to the general population sample. Results indicated that the causes of loneliness of the psychologically disordered people are significantly different from those of the general population.
