Abstraksi:A 0-4 rating scale of symptom severity, composed of five items (danger to self, danger to others, ftinctional decline, confusion, and depression) was completed by experienced clinicians who, during an 18 month period' interviewed and observed 169 adults placed in a crisis unit of a rural community mental health center. The ratings were strongly associated with subsequent recommendations for inpatient (n - 69) or outpatient (n - 100) interventions with the former receiving significantly more severe ratings on all five dimensions The potential for suicide (i.e., danger to self ratings) was the primary discnminatmg variable. ROC curve analyses suggested that clinicians used a configural, differential weighting approach in arriving at a dispositional decision
