Abstraksi:Smoking and alcohol consumption, which may lead to serious health problems, are commonly observed among young people. One of the variables that may affect this common occurrence is social anxiety. This study examines the relationship between social anxiety and smoking and alcohol consumption. Methods: The participants were 650 university students (male = 257, female = 393). Results: The findings show that tobacco and alcohol consumption is to a significant extent explained by social avoidance with subscales of social anxiety. However, no significant associations were observed between social anxiety and these habits. Conclusions: The outcome of this study indicates parallels with some of the findings in the literature, while differing from the findings of other studies.
