Abstraksi:Twenty-five fast readers (338 words per minute, wpm) and 25 slow readers (152 wpm) participated in a letter detection experiment (detecting f in of, detecting h in the) with the prediction that fast readers would show greater word unitization. Unitization theory proposes that individuals process units of letters versus identifying each individual letter of a word. For the letter h, slow readers made more errors overall than fast readers and both fast and slower readers made a similar frequency of errors in detecting h in the and in other words, but no interaction emerged. Similarly, for the letter f, slow readers again showed a trend to make more errors overall than fast readers and both fast and slow readers made more errors detecting f in o/than in other words, but no interaction emerged. Reading rate apparently does not impact word unitization.
