Abstraksi:This article explores the foundations of perceived instrumentality of schoolwork from four different views: future time perspective theory, expectancy-value theory of achievement motivation, delay of gratification theory, and social cognitive theory. These theories serve as an explicit rationale for attempts to delineate students' motivational tendencies and task selection, and their orientation toward the future. A series of studies that provide support to the premise that perceived instrumentality is an important construct, which deserves attention from educators, theorists, and researchers are discussed. Perceived instrumentality of learners' task engagement and subsequent personal adjustment to orchestrate schoolwork in a way that secures academic achievement and enactment of long-term goals has important educational implications.
