Abstraksi | : | This review investigates the origins of empathy, the functional use of empathy in social interactions, and disorders based on breakdowns of the normative steps toward full empathy formation. Evolutionary explanations are considered, and a brain based theory on the innate mechanisms responsible for empathy is explored. The mirrorneuron system is implicated in playing a large role in socio-emotional functioning due to its inherent visuo-motor capabilities. A hypothesis is proposed that auditory pathways may also play a prominent role in empathy formation based on evidence that empathic cries emerge because of the emotional content (distress) of the cries, and that motherese elicits emotional responses in very young infants. Baron-Cohen’s empathizing system model is discussed to understand the developmental pathways that lead to empathy and how delays or deficits in these pathways can help us discern the etiology of developmental or personality disorders such as autism and psychopathy. These disorders are mentioned to compare and contrast the cognitive and affective components of empathy. |
