Abstraksi:Abstract Four different methods for ranking birth order have emerged in birth order research: the Adierian, dichotomous, serial, and continuous methods of ranking. The authors explore the strengths and limitations of these methods. The purpose of this article is to compare the four competing methods of measuring birth order in one sample of 145 undergraduate students using the construct of emotional understanding. Simple correlations yielded different results for each method. The authors discuss these results and present recommendations for conducting future research on birth order.
