| Abstraksi | : | Although close relationships have been studied extensively, the theory and research on loneliness in close relationships is relatively scarce. Given the potential impact of loneliness on partners in close relationships, the main purpose of this article is to address loneliness as an antecedent of relational loss. More specifically, loneliness is discussed as a consequence of a loss or an absence of a supportive, benevolent, and rewarding pair-bonding due to enduring marital distress, divorce, or widowhood. We also highlight some maladaptive cognitions and interactive behaviors that aggravate and intensify loneliness, creating a loop that lonely people may find difficult to break away from. Finally, we discuss some assessment and therapeutic implications for couple therapists addressing loneliness in the context of close relationships such as marriage. |
