Abstraksi | : | Loneliness is a universal experience, which transcends age, gender, geography, and culture. Religion, and one?s degree of religiosity, is known to significantly affect one?s approach to life, behavior, and social involvement. The present, preliminary, study aimed to explore whether the experience of loneliness is influenced by one?s degree of religious observance. As a point of departure, we focused on Israeli Jews. Two hundred and fifty participants took part in our study, after they identified themselves as secular/traditional, conservative, or orthodox. They answered a 30 yes/no loneliness questionnaire, and results indicated that loneliness is indeed such a basic human experience that it transcends religion as well. None of the three groups scored significantly differently on any of the five subscales. The present was a preliminary study directed at Israeli Jews. Similar studies with people of other religious denominations could further highlight that issue. |
