Abstraksi:Psychological disorders have a profound effect on one's quality of life, social intercourse, and physical well being. Loneliness has been found to be a frequent companion of those afflicted with chronic psychological disorders. The present study examined the ways in which the psychologically disordered cope with loneliness. Three hundred and thirty three participants volunteered to answer a 30-item yes/no questionnaire, reflecting on their loneliness experiences and how they coped with it. Those coping strategies included: Acceptance and reflection. Self-development and understanding. Social support network. Distancing and denial. Religion and faith, and increased activity. The psychologically disordered were compared to the general population and then divided into six homogenous subgroups: Bipolar, Depression, Schizophrenia, Anxiety Disorders [including GAD, OCD, PTSD, Phobias and Panic attacks. Substance Abuse, and "Other", which included those afflicted with Tourettes syndrome. Body Dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, and Identity disorder. They were compared to each other and to the general population sample which was composed of those who are healthy and not afflicted with chronic illnesses. Results indicated that the psychologically disordered differ significantly from the general population in the manner in which they cope with loneliness.
