Abstraksi:Social support has an influence on depression in individuals with medical illnesses. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between functional social support (FSS) and major depression (MD) in cancer patients. The sample was 1,336 adult cancer patients (588 males, 748 females; age ranged froni 20 to 80+) from the Canadian Community Health Survey 2000/01 (CCHS 1.1). A low level of FSS was associated with MD in each of the two sex and age groups. In male patients, tangible support and positive social interaction were associated with MD but affectionate and emotional/information supports were not. Future studies using longitudinal design with more comprehensive data on patients' medical characteristics are needed to advance our knowledge on the association between FSS and MD among cancer patients.
