Abstraksi:Recent research emphasizes the hierarchical, multidimensional makeup of fear of failure including the intrapersonal and interpersonal fears which undergird it. The intrapersonal dimension of fear of experiencing shame and embarrassment, for example, has been associated with the adoption of avoidance achievement goals, while dimensions of an interpersonal nature (e.g., fear of important others losing interest) have also been associated with maladaptive achievement motivation such as socially prescribed perfectionism. The purpose of the present study was to further examine the relationship between the dimensions of fear of failure and approach-avoidance achievement goals among university students (N= 308). Canonical correlation results indicated that the set of fear of failure and achievement goal variables were correlated (r = .36). Mastery-avoidance and performance-approach goals were significant contributors to the composite achievement goal variable, while the intrapersonal fear of failure variables explained the majority of variance in the latent fear of failure variable. Additionally, fear of devaluing one’s self-estimate emerged as a significant fear of failure dimension in relation to the composite achievement goal variable.
