Abstraksi:This study tests the influence of ethnic group and temporal influences of descriptive and injunctive norms on adolescent smoking behavior. A panel of high school students (N = 1,607) completed a self-administered survey in the 9th grade and again in the 12th grade. Fixed effects hierarchical regression analyses indicated that the influence of descriptive and injunctive norms was greater at the 12th grade than at the 9th grade. While salient descriptive norms resulted in increased smoking at both data points, the strength of injunctive norms did not affect the amount of smoking in the 9th grade. Ethnic group moderated the relationship between descriptive norms and smoking, where Caucasian adolescents were more influenced than their African American counterparts.
