Abstraksi:Norcross, Horrocks, and Stevenson (1989) reported that students widely endorsed the use of extra credit in college courses. Faculty who used extra credit in their courses indicated that some of the advantages of extra credit included “explore a topic in greater depth” and “motivate students to work harder” (Norcross et al., 1989, p. 201). They also found that the use of extra credit is especially pronounced in the social sciences and that the most frequently used assignments involve additional written work. The researcher developed an extra credit assignment that is used across multiple psychology courses called Media S.E.E. It is consistent with Palladino, Hill, and Norcross’s (1999) suggestions that extra credit opportunities be equally accessible to all students, pedagogically sound, built into the course structure, and comprise no more than 5% of the final grade. The assignment, criteria, and instructions included in the syllabus are described.
