Abstraksi:One hundred and seventy four undergraduates read a mock crime scenario that described a case of sexual assault on a woman by a man. In the vignette, the offender either expressed remorse, denied feeling remorse, or, in a control condition, made no statement about remorse when given the opportunity to do so. There was also a second control condition that made no mention of remorse. Expressing remorse had no effect on recommended prison sentences, but the recommended time to be spent in prison before parole was less when the offender expressed remorse than when he denied feeling remorse or made no response. Generally, both sentence and parole judgments were positively related to belief that the offender accepted responsibility and were negatively related to perceptions that he accepted responsibility and that he expressed remorse. Suggestions are offered for future research.
