Abstraksi:Abstract The authors used fourth-wave data from 977 married respondents from the Marital Instability over the Life Course study (Booth, Amato, White, Johnson, & Edwards, 1998). An Adierian theoretical structure was proposed for understanding problemsolving strategies that link to marital satisfaction. The respondents were split into a primary sample (n = 621 ) and a validation sample (n = 356). In both samples, cooperation, conflict, and the control variables of age, sex, education, and family income were analyzed via multiple linear regression. Cooperative behaviors indicative of social interest, like visiting friends or working around the home together, were positively related to marital satisfaction, and conflict behaviors, like engaging in serious quarrels or frequent disagreements, were negatively related. Implications for both researchers and practitioners were explored.
