Abstraksi:This study examined the accuracy of subjects' judgments of liquid volume as a function ofthe actual stimulus volume. Participants (A^ = 80) estimated the volume of water that they had drunk or poured on each trial (10- 232 ml), with or without the presence of weight cues. Half the subjects were preloaded with alcohol, and half with placebo. A 2 X 2 Í < 2 X 10 ANOVA indicated that subjects overestimated volume when drinking, thus contradicting the underestimation effect reported by Salthouse, Kolditz, Bumberry, and Johnston (1980). However, subjects underestimated volume in the pouring task. Prior alcohol consumption did not affect estimates of volume, nor did weight cues. The relationship between the perceived volume drunk and the actual volume is described as accurately by a linear function (r = .997) as by Stevens's power law. Composite volume judgments, averaged over all conditions, were extremely accurate.
