Abstraksi:This study tested the hypothesis that the highly predictive role of internalized anger on psychopathology was mediated by shame, or internalized guilt. A sample of 179 college students was given the STAXI, a measure of anger and anger expression, the Symptom-Checklist-90-R, and the TOSCA, a measure of guilt and shame. Guilt was positively correlated with positive mental health while shame was negatively correlated with mental health. The effects of intemahzed and trait anger were little changed by controlling for shame, while the correlations of shame with mental health were greatly lowered when controlling for internalized anger. Thus, the opposite of our hypothesis was supported. Results were discussed in terms of the importance of conceptually separating guilt from shame and the persistent finding that internalized and trait anger are much better predictors of negative mental health than is hostility.
