| Abstraksi | : | Abstract Fear can be examined from many viewpoints. The author explicates how Alfred Adier's perspective stems from the Epicurean and Stoic philosophies. This short historical background is followed by key passages illuminating Adier's understanding of the dynamics of fear. Finally, because Adler specified a difference between fear of external matters and internal, existential fear, his twofold viewpoint is tested in a study of 223 adult participants using the Fear Survey Schedule (Wolpe & Lang, 1969/1977). Data analysis offers insights into a hierarchy of client-patient manifestations of fear that validates two divisions of fear and gives support for Adier's conception of fear and its dynamics. |
