Abstraksi:Abstract Alfred Adler understood that the individual's and society's well-beings were inextricably interwoven. Thus, he was a pioneer in community psychiatry, in group counseling and group psychotherapy, and in community-oriented child guidance. His perspective, that early childhood family life has long-term influences on the shape of personality, and his understanding that a well-developed "social interest" is the hallmark of mental health, led to his postulating many decades ago that fundamentally humans all have a need to belong. When humans feel belonging, they function well. When they do not feel belonging, healthy functioning decreases. This issue of The Journal of Individual Psychology, with empirical studies and with case histories, supports what Adler stated long ago, that humans have a fundamental need to belong.
