Abstraksi:This study tested for a suppression effect in verbal memory due to prior viewing of pictorial stimuli, as reported by Boesch and Standing (1990). Separate groups first viewed seven types of verbal or nonverbal visual stimuli, or blank control slides, and then a list of concrete words. Recall of the concrete words was reduced by proactive interference from all seven types of prior material, but was suppressed more strongly by pictures, shaded drawings and line drawings; this suppression effect did not occur for random visual forms. Prior verbal stimuli (concrete words, abstract words, and nonsense syllables) reduced recall of the second list in accordance with the stimulus similarity principle. The total number of items recalled from the first and second lists was approximately 18, under all conditions except nonsense syllables (14 items), suggesting global as well as local workspace limitations.
