| Abstraksi | : | A distinction is made between the relatively common psychiatric condition of minor non-suicidal self injury and major fortiis of self-mutilation with focus on a rare exemplar of the latter, self-inflicted enucleation or removal of the eye. The case study of a 15 year old girl is presented in which self enucleation occurred after the perusal of a biblical passage related to sin, guilt and expiation via eye plucking. Neuropsychological test data and the results of neuroimaging (SPECT) suggested concrete, literal thinking and right hemisphere hypoperflision consistent with a reduced capacity to think metaphorically and figuratively. It is posited that in the context of stress and psychiatric problems, the literal interpretation of the biblical verse was the spring to action resulting in enucleation. |
